The rucksack is a classic design, but it has a flaw- it can be opened by anyone, behind the wearer's back! Consoling a friend who had his laptop stolen on a busy train, Tom had the thought "what if the rucksack closed on your back?". That way, when the rucksack is worn, the zip is hidden and your possessions are protected.

The first ever Hawthorn Rucksack was made on sewing machine in a living room, from green vinyl and brown wool, with a vertical zip on the back panel. Whilst the contents were protected, we didn't like the design- modern rucksacks have to store laptops, but with a vertical zip, the laptop had to be taken out every time the rucksack was opened. A new design was needed.

Our flagship product,  Hawthorn Original, is the solution. The result of two years' designing, refining, sourcing, prototyping and road testing until we made a rucksack we couldn't break. We realised that the zip can be placed horizontally, underneath the straps. Our unique design closes onto the back of the wearer, providing unrivalled protection against theft, whilst still allowing full functionality with open access, internal pockets and easy laptop storage.

Our unique design allows easy access whilst offering unrivalled protection against theft.

Making a Hawthorn

In an age where the quality and welfare of manufacture is hidden more than ever, we are proud that our rucksacks are constructed to the highest specifications by our experienced team in the east end of London. We take pains to have a close relationship with our suppliers, using materials coming from the UK or through UK-based stockists who guarantee the welfare of manufacture. Our waxed canvas is made by Halley Stevensons in Dundee, who have been producing nothing but the highest quality waxed canvas since 1864, originally as sailcloth. Our organic cotton lining is supplied the Organic Textile Company in Machynlleth who work in ethical collaboration with their partners and weavers in Kerala. We only use luggage grade YKK zips and the finest brass hardware, as high quality components are essential. A Hawthorn Rucksack is made with pride and honesty, to the highest standards.
